What We Do...

Across campus and around the state, from design to delivery, University Printing is your one stop, full-service printer. Whether we are simply processing your output-ready files for printing or developing a marketing campaign for you, we are dedicated to delivering high quality printed products to the university community and other state agencies throughout Georgia. Many already know that using our services eliminates the need for competitive bids that can add cost and production time to your job. It is always a good idea to contact us as early as possible, especially with time-critical jobs, so we can get you on our production schedule. One of the first things to do to initiate a job is to get an estimate. The section on Getting Estimates will explain this procedure.

Design Services

University Printing offers complete design services. We can meet with you and discuss your design needs. We will develop your concepts or develop a campaign for you. The Gallery section highlights both our customer-designed print jobs and jobs that we have designed and printed.

Offset vs. Quick Copy

One important thing to emphasize to those unfamiliar with offset printing is that it is very different from the processes of a quick-copy service. There are many aspects to an offset printing workflow that need to be understood to ensure that your job moves as quickly as possible through our systems. The section below highlights the six main production areas of an offset printing operation.

How We Do It...

Preflight

Preflight is the process by which we check your output-ready job to be sure it is ready to send through our imaging systems. After your job has been estimated, approved and assigned a job number, it then goes to Prepress where several aspects of your job are examined to be sure it is, in fact, ready for output.

First, we check to see if a page proof has been supplied so we will have an idea of what we’ll be working with. Next, we download your files and confirm that the program files as well as other supporting files, such as photographs, logos, fonts, etc. have been supplied. We check to be sure the bleeds (if any) have been properly designated. If necessary, we make a custom font folder for your job’s fonts to ensure typographical tracking errors do not occur or are kept to a minimum. It is always a good idea to provide complete font sets for a given font and a bad idea to create custom font suitcases with mixed sets of fonts. If you are supplying your job as a PDF file, please review the information on PDFs in the File Formatting section of Your Files.

The next step is to open your program file(s) and check to see that all the images and/or graphics are properly linked. If yours is a process color (CMYK) job, we check to be sure there are no RGB or spot colors used in your document or supporting files. If yours is a spot color job, we check to be sure your spot colors have been properly assigned in the document and supporting files. This is done by opening each individual image and graphic file. During this process, we also check, and if necessary, assign, the proper color profile that will provide the best imaging results on our systems. See the notes about color in the File Formatting section of Your Files.

Proofing

The last thing done in preflight is to print a page proof to compare to the customer supplied page proof to be sure we are giving back the expected product. You must then examine and sign off on our printed page proof before your job moves into the final proofing stages of our imaging systems. It is a good idea to check your job very carefully at this point as this is the least expensive phase of the workflow to catch any final errors that may have been previously missed. If you find errors, we then make corrections and print another page proof. In most cases, especially with spot color jobs, we will also print color separations of your job to be sure overprints and knockouts are set correctly.

Final Proofing

After you have signed off on your page proof, your job then goes through our imposition software and a final, imposed, color proof is produced. You will receive a "blueline" proof and a digital, color match proof that is “fingerprinted” to our press that will give you a good idea of what you can expect your job to look like after it is printed.

Corrections can still be made at this point, but at a significantly higher cost than at the page proof stage. From here, your approved job will go directly to press plate.

Printing Your Job

Once your job is plated and delivered to the pressroom our stockroom checks the order and supplies the appropriate paper stock to the press. The job will be set up on press and all aspects of the job will be checked by a production supervisor for color, format and registration to produce the highest possible quality.

Bindery Operations

After tbe printing is completed, your job is transferred to our bindery for the appropriate finishing process to be set up and checked for final format and quality. All finishing operations are checked back to the original order to assure customer satisfaction. Once bindery operations are complete, the job is then packaged for delivery.

Delivering Your Job

Our shipping department prepares your job with appropriate mailing or delivery instructions to assure proper and timely delivery on or off campus.
